Urban Empathy, Capitalizing on Sustainable Urban Models in the Mediterranean

The Urban Environment Observatory (OMAU) hosted on June 21st a Public Capitalization Seminary of Urban Empathy Project , in which representatives of a total of 35 European projects, financed by 17 different programs, as well as representatives of 9 European networks.

Urban Empathy Project, led by Malaga City Council, is financed by the ERDF through MED Programme, which involves cities and public institutions from Spain, Germany, France, Italy, Greece, Slovenia and Bosnia Herzegovina. Urban Empathy, thus, becomes a model for strengthening knowledge and the sharing of successful results in the field of Sustainable Urban Models. On day 20th, prior to the public seminar, representatives of partner cities held a working inner journey as well as a workshop focused on Energy Efficiency in buildings, led by 2 MED Programme strategic projects, ELIH-MED and MARIE.

With the approval from the European Commission to Urban Empathy Project, it gave a new show of support and reinforcement to policies and actions on Urban Sustainability in the Mediterranean area . The decision by the MED Programme came to join the renewed collaboration commitment with CAT -MED Platform on Sustainable Urban Models for 2014-2020. In this sense , the work of more than 25 European cities CAT-MED Platform members will be instrumental in terms of preparing the European Urban Policy in the new programming period frame, that houses this project as capitalization strategy.

The ultimate goal of Urban Empathy is to build a permanent structure that serves as a meeting point for all projects, as well to their technicians and politicians, and in general for all the stakeholders, where it can be evaluated and shared the results that improve the efficiency of sustainable urban policies in the Mediterranean. To transform the results into effective policies and actions will be one of the primary tasks of Urban Empathy Project, which will require close collaboration between technicians and policy makers, in order to overcome the obstacles that hinder the implementation of sustainable policies in the EU. The analysis of common priorities on urban sustainability in the Mediterranean and the articulation of funds in order to implement the results complement the main objectives of this project.
