CAT-MED Platform and MedCities signed an agreement on SUSTAINABLE, SMART AND SOCIALLY INCLUSIVE MODELS

The CAT-MED Platform signed a new cooperation agreement with the MedCites Network, through the Malaga City Council, Urban Environmental Observatory (OMAU), to establish synergies, in the MED and EU context, that promote the implementation of smarter integrated urban models and more sustainable and socially inclusive cities, based on the classic Mediterranean model, which is characterized as complex and compact city with proximity to basic services.

The agreement has been signed in the frame of the USUDS Project, on 15th September at OMAU, during the II USUDS Dissemination Seminar on Strategic Urban Planning in Maghreb and the new lines of European funding.

Among the objectives pursued with this agreement we can highlight the following:

  • Preservation of biodiversity, promotion of energy efficiency and savings, climate change mitigation and approaches to fight against social inequality and vulnerability.
  • The integrated urban development actions are defined as strategic tools to improve and to address the challenges on social and territorial cohesion, while archiving smarter, more sustainable and socially inclusive urban models, by implementing the objectives of the Europe 2020 Strategy.
  • To promote the role of cities as engines of the economy, places where to impulse creativity connectivity, innovation and, as genuine Living Labs, giving room to experiment and work proposals in order to improve the quality of life of its citizens with his direct participation.

MedCities Network was established in Barcelona in November 1991 under the auspices of the Technical Assistance Program for the Environment in the Mediterranean (METAP), jointly funded by the European Investment Bank (EIB), the Programme of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the European Commission and the World Bank. Barcelona, currently, held the function of general secretariat of the network. The network is made up of cities from Mediterranean countries, among which are Alexandria (Egypt), Barcelona (Spain), co Dubrovnik (Croatia ), Rome (Italy), Tetouan (Morocco), Thessaloniki (Greece) and others.

A MedCities' objectives are the promotion of the role of sustainable urban development as a general policy for the Mediterranean Region. In this connection, it participates as a permanent observer in the United Nations' Mediterranean Action Plan and it is also a member of the Mediterranean Commission for Sustainable Development in the Local Government Area. Medcities is also a member of the steering committee for the European Sustainable Cities and towns Campaign and of the Mediterranean Working Group of the Union of Cities and Local Governments.

Meanwhile, the main objective of the CAT-MED Platform, launched in May 2009 and it is integrated by 28 partners, is developing sustainable urban models based on classic Mediterranean city, defined by the building compactness, urban complexity and where the pedestrian scale brand proximity to public services. It develops a system of common urban indicators, and works to develop a pilot experience: “the Green Apple", as a symbol of territorial, social and technological cohesion, encouraging citizen participation and discussion.

This initiative is in line to a similar agreement signed in April 2014, between the CAT-MED Platform and the Mediterranean Network of Medinas; and it gives continuity to the Urban Empathy Capitalization process, while finding synergies and agreements with other related MED and EU Networks, with the aim to build together further actions on urban sustainability in our cities.
